1st Interdisciplinary Conference

“Christianity and Humanism”

6-8 November 2019

Conference Announcement

The Chair and the Academic Board of the Ecclesiastical Academy of Athens are pleased to announce the organisation of the 1st Interdisciplinary Conference which is going to take place at the Ecclesiastical Academy of Athens from 6 to 8 November 2019. The conference has the special theme “Christianity and Humanism”.

Drawing from recent and modern scientific findings, the 1st Interdisciplinary Conference has primarily two research interests. The first one lies on the generally accepted notion that Ancient Greek philosophers are the fathers of Humanism whereas the other one primarily centres on the role of Christianity in giving depth and redeeming value not only to the concept of Humanism but also  to the application of its principles. Hence, the aim of this conference is twofold. Firstly, it aims at approaching its main theme from as many different facets as possible through the constructive dialogue of the humanitarian, social and liturgical scientific fields as well as science and art. Secondly, its purpose is to make us bring back to our pious and grateful memory the great philanthropic words of Saint Nectarios: “Knowing what they are and what they ought to become, Greeks strived for their self-fulfilment […] the knowledge of what is good, virtuous and true and the innate love towards other human beings were enough to instil the desire in the Greek hearts to embrace and impart all these qualities. Hence, Greeks became the teachers of humanity […] this heavenly love became the motivation of all their spiritual ardours […] and on a par with these qualities their moral character was formed. Such character was inevitably elated by the principles of Christianity”.

This conference is addressed to clergymen, academics, instructors, researchers, university students as well as all those who wish to become involved in the discussion of complex dynamical problems as well possible solutions centring on the issues of Christianity and Humanism.
